Making my First App – Reskinning a Trivia App

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

Start With Reskinning

Like many appreneurs before me, I will be starting my app business by going down the route of reskinning apps. This is the way suggested by Chris Chidgey of the App Business Podcast and many others.

For those of you who do not know, reskinning essentially involves purchasing source code and then editing content such as the text, sounds and graphics to create your own unique app. The nice this about reskinning is that you can use the code over and over again to create multiple apps, without having to write a single line of code.

I am following a course on Udemy outlining how to publish an iOS trivia app without coding. The course goes through the entire process of creating an app and comes with a fully functioning source code worth $249!

The app contains ads from multiple ad networks, and in-app purchases; I will be interested to know how lucrative this model will be. From my experience in the past, I have found ads to be quite annoying within mobile games – so it will be interesting to see if it is something that puts users off.

As much as I would love to outsource writing the questions and the graphics reskinning, my current budget and risk averseness will not allow me to do so.

So far I have found writing the questions to be reasonably fun, as I am writing questions for a topic of personal interest. The graphics however have required me to do a bit of learning about Paint.NET. I am trying to keep things reasonably simple by not changing the original graphics too much – other than editing the colors and fonts.

The only thing I will outsource is the app icon on Fiverr for $5.50 USD.
